What is an Operational Group?
An Operational Group (OG) is a collaboration of actors from different profiles, such as farmers, researchers, universities, etc., to jointly address a specific problem or opportunity from a multisectoral approach.
OPERATIONAL GROUP ON HEMP STANDARDIZATION
The Operational Group for the Standardization of Industrial Hemp in Spain, Cultivation and Transformations has been formed to develop a functional guide as a tool for the cultivation and processing of industrial hemp in Spain. The existing regulations are practically unknown and do not consider the use of leaves or flowers.
Specific Objectives
- The production of fiber and seeds does not present more challenges than the lack of transformation centers that make the cultivation profitable and therefore, the expansion of the cultivation area. On the other hand, regulations are needed for the development of food supplements or “novel foods” that include cannabinoids in their formulations, as this is a de facto reality in the global market. Products based on cannabinoids that cannot be classified as food supplements will move to the pharmaceutical category.
- The previously mentioned regulation (ROYAL DECREE 1729/1999, of November 12) is outdated, incomplete, and difficult to comply with. The main objective of this project is to unify criteria among administrations, sector actors, and the general population, a necessary process to create a sustainable hemp industry.
