WHAT IS an Operational Group?
A joint strategy to address the challenges of the sector
An Operational Group (OG) is a gathering of actors from different profiles, such as farmers, researchers, universities, etc., to collaboratively tackle a specific problem or opportunity from a multi-sectoral approach.

PISTABIOTECH OPERATIONAL GROUP
Biotechnological Utilization
This project aims for the biotechnological utilization of by-products generated in the processing of pistachios, including the water used in shelling, in a circular economy context.

•
OBJECTIVES
Comprehensive Valorization
The project addresses the comprehensive valorization of pistachio by-products, from their characterization and utilization of bioactive compounds to the sustainable production of new materials and high-value products, evaluating their sustainability and economic viability while promoting the circular economy in the agri-food sector.
[1]
Characterization
Characterize the current production and management of pistachio by-products in the Community of Madrid, including a market study and analysis of processing methods (dry and wet peeling).
[2]
Evaluation
Evaluate and compare the by-products generated according to variety, cultivation regime (dryland/irrigated) and type of management (conventional/ecological), identifying their chemical composition and potential for valuation.
[3]
Extraction
Extract and characterize bioactive and volatile compounds (such as polyphenols and essential oils) present in the by-products, with potential applications in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries.
[4]
Fractionation
Fractionate the lignocellulosic biomass of the by-products to obtain fractions enriched in cellulose and lignin, through sustainable chemical processes (Kraft, organosolv, green solvents).
[5]
Development
Develop new materials and products: bioactive and biodegradable films for packaging from cellulose and activated carbon from lignin for environmental applications.
[6]
Analysis
Analyze the sustainability of the developed processes, including carbon footprint, energy efficiency, and economic feasibility.
[7]
Transfer
Transfer the knowledge generated to the agri-food sector, promoting the adoption of circular economy practices and the creation of new business models based on waste valuation.
