WHAT IS A OPERATIONAL GROUP?
A joint strategy to tackle the challenges of the sector
An Operational Group (OG) is a grouping of actors with different profiles, such as farmers, researchers, universities, etc., to jointly address a specific problem or opportunity from a multi-sectoral approach.

SIMBIOLIVA OPERATIONAL GROUP
Circular biotechnology of the olive grove
The project aims to develop biotechnological solutions to promote a circular economy of the olive grove associated with the olive pomace, which allows protecting the soil from degradation and increasing the resilience of crops. SIMBIOLIVA proposes a strategy based on physicochemical processes (three-phase centrifugation and increasing temperature in thermosonication) that reduces the presence of polyphenols by solubilizing them, along with biological treatments that apply a load of specific microorganisms that ultimately degrade the polyphenols in the olive pomace, thereby reducing treatment times.
All of this aims to obtain a system that leads to a nature-based solution that directly and positively impacts the olive and agricultural sector.

OBJECTIVES
Biotechnological valorization
The project comprehensively addresses the biofunctionalization of strategic crops, from the selection and characterization of nutrients and bioactive compounds to the evaluation of their benefits, sustainability, and market potential.
[1]
Valuation
Valuation of polyphenols in the pomace (reducing their toxicity) through low-energy physical extraction methods.
[2]
Reduction
Reduction of polyphenolic compounds in pomace and improvement of nutritional properties for plants through biological treatments.
[3]
Improvement
Improvement of resilience and nutrition of crops and plant species through biological methods, biofertilizers (reduction of synthetic fertilizers).
[4]
Integration
Synergistic integration in a symbiotic – integration of processed alperujo with biofertilizers (optimization of process energy, improvement of soil health and agricultural and forestry crops).

COMPONENTS AND SCOPE OF ACTION
Entities and territorial presence
The SIMBIOLIVA Operational Group is made up of 7 entities participating to achieve the objectives of this project, which has a presence in 3 Autonomous Communities.
