The Spanish Patent and Trademark Office O.A. (OEPM) and the Plant Biotechnology Technological Platform – BIOVEGEN have recently renewed their agreement to establish a framework for cooperation in order to facilitate, promote, and stimulate the knowledge and use of Industrial Property (IP) rights within the Technological Platform. The renewal of this agreement will establish a bidirectional channel for institutional communication between the OEPM and BIOVEGEN to boost the competitiveness of the Spanish industry in the field of innovation, a determining factor for the success and consolidation of companies.

In this regard, the agreement emphasizes the importance of ensuring the legal protection of innovation activities through various forms of industrial property, an essential element to guarantee exclusive rights to the holder and prevent third parties from exploiting their innovations, with patents also being powerful tools for internationalization.

Additionally, the OEPM, among other actions, commits in this agreement to provide support for training BIOVEGEN professionals in IP management, conducting training sessions to raise awareness of the industrial property protection system in its various forms, the technological information services offered by the OEPM, and the protection mechanisms for R&D results. Furthermore, the OEPM will also support BIOVEGEN in the processes of searching for documentation, studies of patentability, patent applications, and will provide a direct information service with IP managers. The Patent Technological Reports and Technological Surveillance Reports requested by BIOVEGEN will have a 30% discount.

The agreement was recently published in the BOE No. 42 on February 18, 2025, and will last for four years, extendable for another four, upon unanimous agreement of the parties.
