José María Fontán, the new president of BIOVEGEN, highlighted last Sunday in an interview for Onda Agraria the crucial role of the biotechnology platform in connecting scientific research with the real needs of agricultural production. Fontán stated that the future of the sector depends on public-private collaboration and the ability to integrate advanced technologies that can address urgent challenges such as water and fertilizer efficiency, among others.
A central point of his intervention was the updates on the progress in the European Commission regarding New Genomic Techniques (NGTs). Fontán commented that NGTs offer greater safety and efficiency compared to traditional methods for creating crops resistant to pests and droughts, among many other agricultural challenges. Given the regulatory delay in the European Union, Fontán noted that BIOVEGEN is collaborating with administrations by conveying consultations and needs related to this, in addition to the different sessions held and planned with the direct responsible parties for this processing to inform about the latest updates and resolve doubts.
